Autism Awareness

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and autism are both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development. These disorders are characterised, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviours. Early intense intervention programs with proven behavioural therapies can improve outcomes.

The Autism Awareness Project will benefit individuals with autism and their families by seeking sponsorship for children with autism and provide awareness to the nation and parents of children with autism. The autism awareness sponsorship will focus on paying for intensive treatments that will teach skills and behavioural strategies allowing children with autism to progress. Each child with autism is unique and, so, each autism intervention plan should be tailored to address specific needs. The early intervention programs involve a child’s entire family, working closely with a team of professionals to attain a common goal. To promote autism awareness Barbados will join the international Light It Up Blue, autism awareness campaign. In honour of this day an event showing support for autism, by turning on Blue lights, is scheduled for April 2nd.

You can help change the future of children with autism and their families by making a donation towards the cost of the intervention program or by sponsoring a child. All services are provided at reduced rates in hopes of making therapy possible. The aim of the Autism Awareness Project sponsorship is to raise funding for various services of Occupational Therapy, Speech and Language Therapy, Behavioural Therapy, Physical Therapy, Psychological assessments, aide support and transportation.
