MORE4KIDS Barbados is a new charity geared towards creating a brighter future for children. The goal of MORE4KIDS is to provide support for families through diverse therapies, academic support, along with staff and parent training by funding services for children in need while raising awareness. There are currently no organisations in Barbados, which focus solely on providing support for services for these children to better their quality of life. More4Kids is entering an exciting and challenging time; as economic pressure on families increase, and the demand for our services continue to rise, we are in a unique position to provide much needed support to these members of our community. We aim for a high quality service provision and activism related to the economic security and community engagement of our patrons, and we welcome committed partners to our team.
Working in the field, we have first hand knowledge of the challenges faced by service providers in Barbados and the need for funding. Currently there are no known statistics for Autism prevalence and resources in the Caribbean. Autism Speaks, the worlds leading autism science and advocacy organisation, announced preliminary results (for North America and UK), that estimate the cost to the autism society is a staggering $126 billion a year in the U.S, a number tripled since 2006, and in the U.K, more than 34 billion, equivalent to $54 billion U.S.
Due to the lack of statistics for the entire Caribbean, we use data collected in the U.S. As of March, 2014, The rate of autism has increased to 1 in 68 children. The complete report can be found in the CDC report Prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder Among Children Aged 8 Years, Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network, 11 sites, United States, 2010. One in every 68 children in America suffers from Autism. This indicates that almost 2 million individuals in the U.S have autism.
Multiple treatments are available for autism as well as related developmental disorders. The different types of treatment can generally be broken down into categories; Behaviour and Communication Approaches, Dietary approaches, Medication and Complementary and Alternative medicine.
Although Barbados is limited with resources, there are available resources. These are not being properly used to the advantage of the children due to the financial situations of the families and lack of awareness of resources, that can aid in education, independence, empowerment and improved quality of life for children with on the Autism spectrum.
Becoming an affiliate of MORE4KIDS is not only a primary means of developing a powerful network, and giving back to the community, but also it helps others and supports a worthwhile cause.
Charities, like businesses, are interested in growing. One of the main goals of MORE4KIDS is to bring awareness to Barbados. The best way is to do this is to develop an affinity with a strong and supportive business in Barbados and the Caribbean.
When a parent first receives an autism diagnosis they often feel devastated, bewildered and alone in trying to come to terms with the diagnosis. It is always best to talk to parents who have received such diagnosis and it can be inspiring to see another family making progress and getting on with life after such diagnosis.
If you need to talk to someone or if you would like to volunteer to help other parents contact More4Kidsbarbados@gmail.com.
